On the 10 October 2007 two members of the General Council of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate, Zenon Hanas SAC and Jacob Nampudakam SAC, made a visit to the Abbey of Masio in order to transfer the mortal remains of the three Pallottine who died in Masio. The visit was also an occasion to meet with the parish priest and many other persons who continue to preserve the memory of the presence of Pallottines in this place. We thank Advocate Patrizia Giavotti for organising this visit. The association of the Abbey of Masio (Province of Alessandria, diocese of Asti) with St. Vincent Pallotti was initiated with the entry of Giuseppe Faa' di Bruno into the Congregation of the Catholic Apostolate in 1845. From that year on, there developed a very rich history of interaction between the Abbey of Masio and the Society of the Catholic Apostolate (Pallottines), above all, thanks to the efforts of Giuseppe Faa' di Bruno himself. The Pallottine presence in the Abbey of Masio lasted for about 140 years, until 1987 when the members of the Italian Province left this place definitively. Until today (2007) traces of the Pallottine presence are evident in this place. We can indicate mainly three such places.
The first place is the so-called "Abbey", where the family Faa' di Bruno and hence Giuseppe Faa' di Bruno actually lived. He was born on 17 February 1815 in Alessandria to Marchese Luigi and Carolina Sappa dei Milanesi. The family living in this Abbey presently preserves the memory of the Faa' di Bruno family. The second place, which belongs to another family at the moment, is the land on which existed the "College of St. Patrick for the Foreign Missions, Masio Piemonte" (as it is imprinted on the seal of the College). In fact, inside the big park we can still find the remains of two buildings of the College. A building with a theatre was destroyed in order to recover the building materials (marble, bricks etc.) We can find until today the statue of Mary, the remains of the chapel and the swimming pool etc. The third place is the parish church "Regina Apostolorum". The parish was erected in 1948. The church was initially used only by the Pallottine community of the College. The present parish priest Fr. Carlo Franco, arrived in 1987, when the Italian Province of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate left the parish. He lives in the building adjacent to the church (where before there was the nursery school and the hall for catechists). The paintings in the church have great historical value. On the main altar we find the statue of Mary, Queen of Apostles and the Child Jesus with the sceptre. Close by are the paintings of the twelve apostles and 40 other saints of diverse nations and cultures. There are three paintings on the ceiling depicting the pilgrim nature of the Church on earth, in purgatory and in heaven. The Church on earth is presented as a ship in which the persons who lived at the time of the construction of the church are depicted (for example, Giuseppe Faa' di Bruno). On the right side we find a chapel dedicated to St.Vincent Pallotti, constructed after his beatification in 1950. Three Pallottine confreres who had lived and worked in the Abbey of Masio were buried in the cemetery of the municipality of Masio,(about 5 kms away from the College). The first one was Bro. Salvatore De Filippis, born in Rome on 15 April 1821. He made his consecration before Raffaele Melia on 2 February 1860 (at the age of 39 years) and died in 1899, on the day of the Feast of Queen of Apostles (14 May). The second one was Bro. Adam Schmitt, born in Germany on 4 February 1840 and died in Masio on 15 March 1905. The third one was Fr. Leopold Timotheus Hackethal, born in Westhausen on 24 January 1875, and member of the Sacred Heart Province. He was ordained in 1903 and was sent to Masio in 1922. He died on 11 January 1934. The Municipality of Masio, with the letter of 22 March 2007, informed the General Council SAC regarding the need of maintenance of the tomb of these three confreres and asked for the decision from the Council whether to renovate or abandon them. The General Council, with the letter of 18 April 2007, requested the Municipality of Masio to collect the "mortal remains of the confreres buried in separate boxes (...) with the intention of depositing them in the tomb of the Generalate in the Cemetery of Verano in Rome". On 10 October 2007, Fr. Zenon Hanas SAC (Vicar General) and Fr. Jacob Nampudakam SAC (General Consultor) left for Masio in order to bring to Rome the mortal remains of the three Pallottines. On 12 October 2007, a Holy Mass, presided over by Fr. Zenon Hanas SAC, was celebrated in the church of SS. Salvatore in Onda for the repose of the souls of the three deceased confreres. On the same day the mortal remains were transferred to the cemetery in Verano to deposit them in the tomb of the Generalate. | |
